Since the 1980s, Scheer has been working on the integration of planning and control processes and primarily technically oriented production tasks as part of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (the Y-CIM model by Prof. Dr. Scheer). However, integration was only possible to a very limited extent due to the fact that information technology was not fully developed at the time. Today, these concepts are being revisited and realized with new technologies. Achieving more flexibility in production and increasing product individualization through Industry 4.0 also impacts manufacturing strategies. Meanwhile, automation makes it possible to move from customer-anonymous to customer-order-based production with an eye toward mass customization.
